Synopsis
We follow the queen-mother Ista. After the event of The Curse of Chalion.
She was Cursed for 25 years and now she is free. The thing though is that everybody thinks she is crazy, because she was cursed and was not good, but she isn't anymore and it's impossible to tell. Who knows she is free is the prime minister and he sends a letter to her caretakers to let them know she is free to do whatever she wants, and with that two knights to go with her. She gets friendly with a messenger and a magicians.
And they all go together on a pilgrimage. Alas, one of the knights get possessed by a demon ( less terrifying than it sounds in this world ).
Also, except for the magician and the possessed, they get captured by a lost battalion of the neighbouring principality.
They get rescued by a Duke, who happens to be the son of a man the queen kinda killed.
The Duke is someone the queen-mother finds attractive, but she discovers she is kinda dead. He's half-brother though is the one lying in bed - and all this happened because of a demon's death close to an accidental death and the duchess not wanting to see her husband dead. All weird magic that a God ( the Bastard, in the books religion ) wants to repair.
We learn that the neighbouring principality has also a queen-mother that controls demons and is capable of putting demons into people and move the demons so they transform themselves, and actually put a demon in her son, the reigning prince.
The Bastard god has given the queen-mother the power to "eat" the demons, and so she gets rid of all evil, and kinda get in a relationship with the half-brother of the duke. And the duke gets to have a semi-honourable death.

My take
It's a good book, about an old woman becoming the protagonist of her life.
