Synopsis
Earth, in the late 21rst century, was close to implosion.
A fluffly alien species come to share their technology, and in exchange they would like to safe keep the art of earth.
2 centuries later, humanity is way better and ask for their art back and the other species says "no sorry"
So a clone, a person that can split into 6 of themselves, a synth and an art historian go on a ship to steal the art back.
They plan to replace the art in the museums with copies that the aliens lent the humans.
They go there with a ship of an insectoid alien who do not seem to like the fluffy aliens.
Once arrived at the fluffy aliens museum where human art is, the group learn that they couldn't really overcome the security tech.
They get caught and learn that it is under debate still wither to return the art but that there is a war, the first war of the fluffy - against the insectoid species.
Also, they learn that the insectoid think the museums are military operating bases.
There the humans realize that they have let in a enemy, and they try to go back to the ship before the worst happen.
But the alien insect has manage to start the destruction of the museum - and the synth dies when the humans escape.

My take
It was a short novel. Maybe there could have been more thoughts, discussion, interest into what constitutes an original, what is the value of a copy.
I don't remember at what point you can read that Walter Benjamin's "the work of art in the age of reproduction" seems to be an obvious inspiration - but it is nice that it is confirmed at the end, as well as the British museum.
