Children of Strife

Adrian Tchaikovsky

Synopsis

The fourth instalment of the children of time series -- which is mostly about uplifting and different type of minds.

We follow people who have found a planet to terraform. They are tech successes that have evaded earth and style themselves gods.
They are not good at terraforming though, until one of them, an old druggy genius, founds a way to transform the planet into a computer unto which we can upload a mind.

We also follow more classic protagonists of the series, a woman who came out of a simulation machine presented in the 3rd book, a representant of a new type of uplifted species ( mantis shrimp ) and Kern, an uploaded mind.

And we follow people living thousand of years after the terraformers left earth who try also to save themselves by escaping earth that is in ruined.

My take

Some ideas are interesting -- the uplifting seems to be the best thing the serie has, and there it presented an interesting case of a species that couldn't integrate, at first, a pan-species community.

The terraformers uploading their brain on a planet was meh, I thought, in the sense that upload was already thought through, and there was an issue with the span of time.

It took me a while to understand as well that one protagonist had a printed body, but that's me.
